Trends of the Ukrainian agro-complex: growing interest in legumes

Ukrainian farmers are increasingly paying attention to the production of legumes. Over the past year, the export of this crop from the country increased by 5%, if you do not take into account soy. A total of 832 thousand tons of legumes were exported in 2018, which is 43 thousand more than last year's export record (in 2017, 789 thousand tons went abroad).

Such a rapid increase in production and sales, including exports of legumes (peas, beans, lentils) is due to a significant increase in the area that they are planted. Not the least role in this is also played by the increasing interest of small and medium-sized farms with respect to legumes, because these crops can bring more income per hectare than grains or oilseeds. And given the rapid development of the technology of growing and marketing products, the amount of revenue for the year may increase significantly.

  • Andrey Yarmak, an economist at the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), expressed his opinion on this. He has already spoken more than once about the approaching possibility of a protein-deficient world, and since it is legumes that contain the highest amount of this element necessary for the human body, the growth in demand for them is absolutely logical and justified. The economist notes that the incentive for the development of leguminous crops is also the fashion for abandoning meat, which is observed in the world. Not the most positive consequences of export growth for the domestic market of Ukraine. On the store shelves now peas and beans can be purchased at prices higher than last year. Accordingly, the average export price has also decreased - today it is on average 7% lower than last year.
