In Ukraine, the distribution area of a dangerous pest, the whitefly, is gradually expanding. Last year, the insect colonized 30-50% of the cabbage plantings since the end of May, that is, earlier compared to previous years.
The whitefly as a wintering pest is recorded for the fourth year in a row. In addition to the Volyn, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Rivne regions, the pest manifested itself in several districts of Vinnytsia and foci in the Chernivtsi region (on Peking cabbage).
Also read:Mass flight was observed from the third decade of May to the end of June. Whitefly's weak flight continued until mid-September. In the early and middle cabbage, 7–15% were damaged, as much as 45–50% of plants with 16–68 adults and larvae per head.
In late cabbage during July-September, the whiteflies were 10-62% harmful, and focal 70-100% of heads in the Vinnitsa and Rivne regions, with 28-100 specimens per plant. In 2018, the pest density was less than in previous years, but the area of distribution increased.
We recommend to read:Adult butterflies adapted to the climatic conditions of Polesia and Forest-Steppe, well enduring the winter in secluded places, and even in the cracks of the soil. In warm weather during the growing season of plants in 2019, the development and harmfulness of the whitefly may be widespread, and further dispersal is likely.
