Which beet varieties for open ground are considered the best, and how to choose the right seeds?

Taste beet familiar to all from childhood? This vegetable culture has long been a frequenter of many vegetable gardens, and the number of culinary variations of beets is simply amazing: they make salads, caviar, soups, cutlets, mashed potatoes, appetizers, boiled or eaten fresh.

What does the choice depend on?

The taste and benefits of beets known to mankind for a long time, so she repeatedly became the goal of selection and a variety of improvements, which led to the emergence of hundreds of its varieties. It is necessary to choose a variety depending on its own cultivation goals, whether it is for human consumption, sale or use as blanks, and the whole variety can be divided into 3 groups:

  1. Early varieties - the crop is harvested 75-100 days after planting. These varieties can tolerate frost well, but they are poorly stored for a long period, so they should be consumed immediately after harvest, but they do not have good taste.
  2. Medium early varieties - the harvest is collected in 110-120 days. I have frost resistance with early varieties, but tastes and presentation are much better preserved.
  3. Late varieties - ripen from 130 days or more. They tolerate frost well and can last for the longest periods.

Beets are also classified according to their use on:

  1. Aft - used for feeding livestock.
  2. Sugar - most often used to obtain beet sugar, at least - as feed for livestock or food for people.
  3. Dining room - used as food.

Good vegetable types in terms of yield

If a farmer or a gardener is faced with the task of planting beets that will produce the greatest yield, then he should pay attention to:

    Early maturing

    Pablo F1

    Sweet and juicy beets. Round shape with thin skin. Ripens from 85 to 95 days, weight 200-400 grams, about 700 quintals are collected from 1 hectare of land.

    Modana

    Juicy and tender beets, the shape is rounded, the root weight is about 250-350 grams, from 1 hectare of land is collected from 500 to 700 quintals.

    Medium early

    Detroit

    Very sweet and very juicy beetroot, weight about 200 grams, round shape, from 1 hectare is collected from 400 to 700 quintals.

    Bordeaux

    Sweet, tender and juicy beets, the mass ranges from 230 to 510 grams, round and slightly flattened form, it is sown 60-120 days, the yield is up to 800 c / ha.

    Late

    Cylinder

    An elongated vegetable weighing up to 700 grams, cylindrical in shape, ripening time from 120 to 130 days, yield 700-1000 centners per hectare.

    Very dense and juicy beets, elongated, weight 200-350 grams, ripening time 110-115 days, yield about 700-900 centners per hectare.

    Successful species in terms of ease of growing

    For those who do not chase for superhigh yields, but simply want to grow beets, without spending too much time on it, the following most simple varieties are suitable for growing.

    Modana

    One of the easiest to grow among the early varieties is Modana.. Beets practically do not get sick, do not require special care and are not afraid of the cold. It weighs from 130 to 260 grams, matures 70-85 days.

    Bordeaux

    A representative from the middle early group is a Bordeaux variety. It is an excellent transplant transplant and a rarely sick variety that provides a bountiful harvest with a minimum of care. It grows from 100 to 110 days, the weight of one root is about 400 grams.

    Ataman

    Among the latter, the Ataman variety can be considered the most unpretentious. Beetroot of this variety is very delicate and sweet, weighs 350 grams. Maturation time about 130 days. Beetroot is cold-resistant, does not require special care, however, at the stage of seed growth it must often and abundantly be watered.

    Lada and grade Ekkendorfsky yellow

    The best variety among fodder beets is the Belarusian variety Lada and the variety Ekkendorfskaya yellow.

    1. Huge yield (Lada yield - up to 1700 centners / ha).
    2. Resistance to cold and drought.
    3. Immunity to many diseases.
    4. Root crop is immersed in the ground at half / third, easily pulled out during harvest.

    Many popular beet varieties, including the Egyptian flat, can be cultivated not only in central Russia, but also in more adverse climatic conditions, for example, in the Urals. However, thermophilic leaf beets are best grown in greenhouses.
