The amount of spring precipitation in Ukraine is the lowest in the last 15 years. How will this affect the grain yield?

Over the past few weeks, the market has been discussing the problem of moisture deficit in the southern regions of Ukraine, which may adversely affect the yield of grain crops.

In order to understand how serious the influence of the lack of precipitation is on the future harvest, analysts from UkrAgroConsult analyzed deviations from the yield trend of winter wheat starting from 2006.

According to expert Elizaveta Malyshko, in January-March 2019 the amount of precipitation is the least in the last 15 years. The expert cited data for the two previous years with the greatest deficiency of moisture in the soil - in 2011 and 2014, noting that in 2014 the yield was higher than the trend, and in 2011 - lower than the trend.

That is, according to analysts, the lack of precipitation, which is now observed at the beginning of the year, will not necessarily affect the grain yield.

“We need to look at the May precipitation,” Elizaveta Malyshko explains. “If in May we have the same amount of precipitation as in 2011, we will get a lower yield trend. If the precipitation is in 2014, we will get higher yield trend.
